Giving Back This Holiday Season

2020 has definitely taken its toll on us in so many ways. This season there are millions of people without jobs, displaced and separated permanently from their loved ones or preparing to spend their first holiday without someone. With Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas and New Years only a few weeks away it’s important to recognize that, for many, this will not be ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. That’s why it’s so important to try and give back this season, in any way that you can while prioritizing your own well-being in this new normal we’re all navigating.

So, are you wondering what you can do to help your community during this time? It doesn’t need to be a grand gesture to make an impact, most memorable and notable acts are the small ones the manageable actions that you can do when you have a free minute or even with a small group of friends. Below, take a peek at some simple acts of kindness that will help lift someone’s spirits this holiday season.

1. Be mindful of where you purchase your gifts. Try and shop from brands that use their profit for good and support causes that contribute to the overall well being of our fellow humans. Shop small and shop local! Think about those privately owned boutiques and shops that you read about and purchase through them instead of from larger conglomerates.

2. Write a letter to an essential worker. Take a few moments to pen a short message to some of our most important and utilized front-line workers this season. Drop them off at your local hospital, fire department or police station to remind them that they’re work isn’t going unnoticed.

3. Make a donation if you’re able. Even a small donation goes a long way. Consider doing a little bit of research into some organizations that you may be interested or invested in and see how you can contribute. If not in a monetary way, try going through your clothes, books and all of the things that undoubtedly have lived in your storage for too long. Consider donating items like these this holiday season too.

4. Volunteer. This may look different during a COVID Christmas but get in touch with your local shelters, animal hospitals and clinics to see if they are in need of a few extra hands this season.

5. Sponsor a food drive or if you know a family in need, buy them their groceries. This is a really simple thing to do. Most grocery stores now ask if you’d like to buy a can of soup or box of pasta at checkout. Consider doing this or, if you’re able, go ahead and buy a haul of groceries from a family you know may be struggling.

6. Donate pet food, toys or beds to your local animal shelter. These shelters are always looking for supplies and a little goes a long way so consider checking your local rescues site for anything they might be in need of this time of year.

7. Send a care package to our troops overseas. It’s hard to imagine being so far away from family, but many men and women won’t make it home for the holidays because of their sacrifice for you and I. Put together a small, (or large) care package for some of our troops to show them we’re thinking of them this season.

8. Be kind! It’s not a biggie but boy does it make a difference.
